A climate for creative industries
March 17 15:00 - 16:30 - Zuilenzaal
Speakers: Richard Smith-Bingham (Nesta
UK), Robert-Jan Marringa (NV
Rede); Marleen Stikker (Waag
Society). Moderator: Joeri van den Steenhoven
The creative industries are seen as an economic sector with great potential. In different countries public policy is being developed to support and develop the creative industries. On the national level this is realised through programmes like Nesta in the UK that acts as a creative investor. On the local level initiatives like incubators, housing for starters, building thematic and regional creative clusters and a range of diverse activities to stimulate the climate for creative industries. In this session several models of supporting the creative industries will be discussed, and what role public policy could play in this process. Two new Dutch initiatives will be presented. Marleen Stikker (Waag Society) will present an Amsterdam-based initiative called Media Guild. This is meant to support creative technostarters in the ICT and Media sector. This is part of the re-development of the Willem de Zwijger-building. Robert-Jan Marringa (NV Rede) will present an Eindhoven-based initiative Design Connection to support new companies in design and technology by providing housing, advice and seed capital. This is part of the re-development of the Philips area of Park Strijp. Then a debate will take place on the rol of public policy to build a climate for the creative industry.
